I am running for the School Board because I believe in our public education system, as well as the importance of volunteerism within our community.  I have seen the difference committed, caring adults can have in the lives of children.  I believe the perspective I am bringing to the school board is unique and will add a valuable lens in supporting the healthy growth and development of all children in our community.

I believe the role of public education in America is to provide universal access to a high quality, free education for all children.  The goal of our public education system should be to help each student achieve his or her highest potential in preparation for a successful, satisfying life.  I believe that academic success and achievement are important elements to the public education system, but it is just one key factor amongst many other important goals that our public education system is tasked with.  Our education system can help improve social conditions, unify a diverse society and create thoughtful, self-sufficient, active members of society.  This is all done in partnership with parents and the community.

If elected to the school board, two key priority areas that I will focus on include:

  • Establishing and maintaining a fiscally responsible budget, while ensuring the quality of our student’s education.  In order to do this, I believe it is important to keep resources in the classroom.  We need to look at our current administrative positions and make necessary adjustments to roles and responsibilities and streamline this structure as much as possible.  In addition, I commit to continuing the advocacy work with local legislators on behalf of our students, educating them about how and why the current funding formula for our education system does not work and insisting on change at the state level.  In addition, I believe it is the responsibility of the school district and board members to continue to dialogue with our Village officials about the importance of increasing our local revenue through further economic development.

  • Continuing to increase communication and transparency amongst the district, parents and community members to fully restore confidence in the district.  Open and transparent communication between parents, school staff, administration, and the school board is key in achieving a healthy, rich educational setting for children.

Priorities

Local elections are quite possibly the most impactful decisions any voter makes. The next local election on April 4th, will see eight candidates vying for four positions on the School District 308 Board. I was very happy to see new names with diverse backgrounds on the ballot.

One candidate that stands out is Heather Moyer. As a young mother with a child just entering and one still not in school yet Heather represents the future of School District 308. She has a vested interest in the District and its future. Diversity is important and it starts from the very top.

If elected Heather will be the only Board member with this unique parent perspective. Heather also has a long career working with teens. These experiences at both ends of the education spectrum gives Heather a well-rounded outlook on the needs of School District 308.

The District may have some serious financial and logistical challenges ahead. I know Heather will use her life experiences as a young mother and social worker to take care to study, listen, engage and lead regarding all aspects of preK-12 education in School District 308. She is thoughtful and insightful.

Please join me in wholeheartedly supporting Heather Moyer for School District 308 Board! April 4! Vote!
